All of this is making me think that you should read up just a smidge on the vampire clans in the Vampire role-playing game, either the old Vampire: the Masquerade system or the new Vampire: the Requiem system (they're similar but not identical). Just because that universe proves that you can have different strains of vampirism in the same universe, and then use that to great effect.
